If you missed it, Tuesdays story was about the history of the Boise River. TL;DR: the Boise River used to be a polluted mess & the creation of the Greenbelt helped spur a major river cleanup, leading to the beautiful Boise River we know & enjoy today.
From Boise reader Jay, who runs the Dry Creek Historical Society, gave me some awesome info about the old cars along the river bank situation. Here's a note from Jay:
One word about the old junked cars along the river bank (great photo of them, by the way): many times they were deliberately placed there in order to reduce bank erosion during periods of high water. In the same sense, when I lead History Hikes up in the foothills I often point out old cars that have been placed part-way up some particularly steep draws, in order to slow down water flowing from the higher elevations and reduce erosion. When it picks up speed, that runoff can be like a buzz saw, particularly after a grass fire. I suspect the "car banks" along the river became unnecessary after the river was dammed, but who knows how long it would have taken for them to rust away, and the banks to return to their natural form, if not for Onweiler's vision.
So interesting! I've always wondered about the cars in the foothills, and in my ignorance I always imagined they ended up there from some teenagers going on an insane joyride. The more you know๐

Today marks 11 years that I've lived in Boise! I moved to Boise on August 11, 2011, so this anniversary feels extra special <3
I love Boise soo much. I am who I am today because of Boise. I was kind of your typical lost 18 year old when I came here - desperate to get out of my tiny hometown and more than ready to start the next chapter of my life. After like 5 minutes of being here I knew Boise was where I wanted to be. I think it's like that for a lot of people. Boise pulls you in. It has an energy that you can't describe, but you feel it and then you need it in your life.
Anyway, I just feel so lucky to live such a good and fun life in Boise. I have met sooo many cool people in Boise. I've made life long friends here, in a few months I'm marrying the the love of my life (we met a Forester's in McCall lol), by some miracle we just bought our first house, I've even managed to make my entire career is about Boise โ how cool is that! I'm looking forward to telling more stories about Boise, continuing to explore our beautiful city, have some lil Boise kids, get a dog, and keep living that gooood Boise life.
Here's to the next 11 <3
