Sup friends? Happy snowy Tuesday!
Do you listen to podcasts? Are you like me and are constantly on the hunt for new shows to listen to? I've started feeling like all podcasts are the same. I know that’s not true because there's a bajillion shows out there, but it seems like so many podcasts are either about current events or true crime and personally, I’m not into either of those. I want to listen to something inspiring or interesting or weird to take me away from work and news. Ya know?
So I wondered: what podcasts are based in Boise? The short answer is lots. And the longer answer is this newsletter.
But first, you should know about Speak Boise Studios. Speak Boise has really changed the podcast game in Boise. As a community-focused podcast studio, Speak Boise allows locals to easily record, produce, and distribute their podcasts without the barrier of expensive equipment or taking the time to learn how to use said fancy equipment. People just show up, record, and Speak Boise takes care of the rest. Boom. Bam. Bang. Podcast done.
Currently, there are more than 20 podcasts recording at Speak Boise! It’s membership-based and has four levels ranging from $200-$2,000 per month. The lowest is $200 a month and includes 4 hours of studio recording time, editing, production, distribution to all major podcast platforms, and adding intro/outro music. The higher level memberships add video, distribution on YouTube, social media graphics, and professional podcast consultation. It’s an amazing offering for people who really want to get into podcasting, but don’t have the time or means (or both) to set up a studio of their own.
Pretty cool, eh? Alright. Without further ado, here are some Boise-based podcasts to binge-listen over your holiday travels or while you are attempting to bake a pie or whatever. Enjoy!
The Boise Bubble is hosted by Natalie and Shane Plummer of @hellomeridian. I got to know them after starting this newsletter and they such a funny and cute couple. They moved here about the same time I did (2011) and have seen first-hand how Boise and the Treasure Valley has grown and changed. On the podcast, they interview people and have conversations with the community at large exploring issues and interests in Boise and the greater Treasure Valley. They cover everything Boise, like local food, festivals, the housing market, weekend adventures, and raising a family in Boise.
Numbers + Tech is hosted by Melissa Shane, who just so happens to be my new CPA! She mostly works with women who are entrepreneurs and small business owners and was inspired to start a podcast after hearing so many inspiring stories from her clients. On Number + Tech, she talks to entrepreneurs about the money side of their business – the highs and lows and everything in between. I've found it super helpful and insightful so far! Also if you need a CPA, check out numbersandtech.com. Tis almost tax season.
The All Things Sensory Podcast is a weekly show for parents of children with sensory needs. Its hosted by Rachel Harrington and Jessica Hill, who are both Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants who specialize in Sensory Integration and Primitive reflex integration. Together hey answer questions related to sensory issues and primitive reflexes, therapy, self-care, parenting, nutrition, and health. Their goal is to empower and educate families, caregivers, therapists, and educators and ultimately create strong, confident children.
Behind Grey Walls is a podcast from the Old Idaho Penitentiary that tells stories about Idaho history, true crime, and previously untold stories about inmates of the Old Pen. It’s written and produced by two Anthony and Skye, who are both employees of the Idaho State Historical Society. It's a fascinating podcast that gives you an appreciation for what life was like in Idaho then and brings humanity to the people and stories you may have heard about while on a visit to the Old Pen.
The Love, Service, Wisdom Podcast is all about digging into the deeper aspects of truly feeling what it means to be alive and on a journey to accepting all parts of ourselves. It’s hosted by Marisa Radha Weppner, a Boise local, yogi, mom, author, DJ, teacher, minister, psychedelic therapist, community organizer, life coach, podcaster, and entrepreneur. You’ll hear interviews and conversations with thought leaders, spiritual teachers, and unabashedly authentic people, as well as musings from Marisa and guided meditations.
The Latino Card is actually on a little hiatus right now, but I included it anyway because they have a show on Radio Boise (Tuesdays 3-3:30 PM, bi-weekly) and a bunch of past episodes you could listen to and learn something from! The Latino Card is hosted by Rebecca De Leon and JJ Saldana and presented by The Idaho Press. Each episode breaks down stories making headlines in Idaho from the Latino perspective. They interview guests and take deep-dives into the subjects that matter most to Idaho's Latino community.
Ok, that's my list! What are your favorite Boise podcasts? Also you can check out more podcasts that are recording at Speak Boise here. Happy listening!
Thanks for reading!
With love from Boise,
Marissa
