    Exploring Broadway Avenue

    Filed under:

    Places

Hi, I'm Marissa Lovell, a writer and lover of all things local. So glad you're here.

What’s on South Broadway Avenue? Only a historic business block full of some of the best places in Boise for locally and sustainably made art, crafting, and vintage shopping. Plus, coffee. Oh and Korean fried chicken (IYKYK)? How about the donut truck that got rave reviews from the Office of the Mayor? AND one of our favorite local ceramics studios is joining the party soon…

If you haven’t visited the shops around South Broadway Ave and Boise Ave recently, consider this your sign.

Here are some not-to-be-missed local businesses to visit along South Broadway:

    Haus Vintage

    📍 1773 S Broadway Ave, Boise

This mother and daughter-owned shop features curated vintage clothing and accessories, plus other treasures like vintage pennant flags and BSU gear. Housed in a historic building that dates back to the early 1900s, Haus brings in new inventory often, so check their current selection!

    Hours: Thur-Sat 11am-4 pm

    Original and Worn

    📍1767 S Broadway Ave, Boise

Right next door, Original and Worn has antiques, found objects, and vintage clothing from throughout Boise’s history. On any given day, you might find taxidermy, advertising memorabilia, art — all handpicked by owner Sean Jennings, who grew up going to estate sales with his family and cultivated an early love for treasure hunting.

Fun fact: their sidewalk sign is a repurposed 1950’s era Conoco oil sign fitted with a Coca-Cola base reimagined by local artist Jay Smith.

Hours: Wed-Fri 10am-2pm, and by appointment

    Cats Eye Creative Reuse

    📍1747 S Broadway Ave, Boise

Crafters, creators, teachers, artists, makers — this one’s for you! Come check out this sweet donation-based thrift store for arts and craft supplies, plus other creative potential materials. I recently found some cool handmade paper in the shop. Owner Shay is on a mission to keep usable materials out of landfills and get them into the hands of local artists, teachers, parents, and creatives of all kinds. Woman-owned and operated, Cats Eye Creative also hosts art shows, workshops, private parties, and summer art camps for kids. Check out their upcoming events and social media.

    Bonita Creative Space

Living up to their name, Bonita Creative Space is home to creatively curated art, jewelry, gifts, and more. They also host classes, workshops, and are available for private parties. Bonus cool factor: owner and artist Christine Thomas creates Grateful Dead-inspired art and plays in a local Grateful Dead tribute band.

    Hideout Coffee

    📍1737 S Broadway Ave, Boise

Coffee and art in the front, motorcycle rehab and metal work in the back. Co-owned by Brigette Nelson, artist and owner of Garden City Projects, and Brandon Wurtz, motorcycle builder and owner of Rawhide Cycles, the concept for Hideout has gone through several iterations before the pair landed their current spot on Broadway. With behind-the-scenes studio space, Brigette and Brandon can work on their respective businesses while showcasing the wares of more than 30 artists and serving up Epiphany Roasters coffee, house-made chai, and Wanna Matcha.

“To me, supporting our community is what’s important,” Brigette said. Reused and recycled materials are a big part of Brigette and Brandon’s work and a common theme at Hideout as well as this Broadway block as a whole.

    Hours: Wed-Fri 9am-4pm, Sat 10am-4pm

A local legend. Featured in The New York Times, Junkyard Jeans boasts a curated selection of American-made vintage denim, including 80s era Levi’s 501s and one-of-a-kind collectible pieces. As the legend goes, owner Eric Schrader found three pairs of rare Levi’s at a garage sale in the 90s and used the funds to buy Junkyard Jeans, which now has a global audience, including celebrity fans. Schrader also does custom chain-stitching and embroidery. Shop in person at their Broadway store and online.
