Tune in, tune out

Do you listen to podcasts? Are you on the hunt for new shows to listen to? There's a bajillion shows out there, but it seems like soo many podcasts are either about current events or true crime – and personally, I don't want to listen to either of those right now. I want to listen to something inspiring or interesting or weird to take me away from work and news. Ya know?

So I wondered: What podcasts are based in Boise? The short answer is lots. And the longer answer is this newsletter. Here's a bunch of Boise area-based podcasts:

From Boise

Did you know we have a podcast? We do! It’s been on a little break since I had a baby but it’s back in action starting… now! From Boise’s podcast is very similar to the newsletter. On Tuesday I read the newsletter story out loud, audiobook style, and sometimes I give you some background on the story and whatnot. On Thursday I pick a few fun things from the newsletter to tell you about. You can subscribe to the podcast here or on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. I'll officially be back this Thursday with a new episode.

City Cast Boise

City Cast Boise is a daily podcast hosted by Lindsay Van Allen. She has guests on to talk about all kinds of things, from life in Boise to politics to food to holidays. Lindsay covers a lot of political happenings in Boise and around the state, especially this time of year. But she also sprinkles in conversations about other things like food recommendations, entertainment, and interviews with local people. I've been on there to talk about Halloween... surprise surprise.

Btw, City Cast is a nationwide network of daily podcasts and newsletters about cities. In addition to Boise, they also have podcasts in Austin, Chicago, Denver, DC, Houston, Las Vegas, Madison, Nashville, Philly, Pittsburgh, Portland, and Salt Lake City.

The Boise Bubble

The Boise Bubble is hosted by Natalie Plummer of @hellomeridian and her husband Shane. On the podcast, they explore local issues and interests and interview cool people in Boise and the greater Treasure Valley. The podcast is on a short break right now but will be back soon.

Behind Gray Walls

Behind Grey Walls is a podcast from the Old Idaho Penitentiary that tells stories about Idaho history, true crime, and previously untold stories about inmates of the Old Pen. It’s written and produced by two Anthony and Skye, who are both employees of the Idaho State Historical Society. It's a fascinating podcast that gives you an appreciation for what life was like in Idaho then and brings humanity to the people and stories you may have heard about while on a visit to the Old Pen.

Mosaics

Mosaics is a podcast from the Idaho Office for Refugees. Host Holly Beech interviews Treasure Valley local people who came to the Boise area as refugees or are working in refugee resettlement in Idaho. They release one or two episodes a month. You can listen online, on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or Amazon Podcasts.

Brown Sound Podcast

Brown Sound Podcast is “two brown best amigos talking about anything & everything from a Latino & Indigenous perspective.” It’s hosted by Daniel Spaulding (Lapwai, Idaho) & Javier Gomez Garcia (Caldwell, Idaho). They discuss life in Idaho and interview people from Latino and indigenous backgrounds living and working in Idaho, like artists, teachers, financial professionals, project managers, and more. You can listen on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Functional Medicine Foundations

Functional Medicine Foundations is a podcast from FMI Center For Optimal Health, a functional medicine clinic in Eagle. The show is hosted by Amber Warren, PA-C. On the show, she has guests on to explore relevant health topics in a fresh way, while educating and inspiring listeners to become the most optimal version of themselves. Discussions cover everything from hormones, men’s and women’s health, different therapies, dentistry, food, and so much more. You can listen online.

Resilient Parenting Podcast

The Resilient Parenting Podcast is a show that tackles tough issues facing anyone in a parenting role and explores the unique challenges and strengths of every family. It’s hosted by Ken Bass, a long-time local radio personality and Michelle Bass, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). They interview experts in the field and talk about all things parenting.

All Things Sensory

The All Things Sensory Podcast is a weekly show for parents of children with sensory needs. It's presented by Harkla, an amazing local company that creates products for kids with special needs. The show is hosted by Rachel Harrington and Jessica Hill, who are both Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants specializing in Sensory Integration and Primitive reflex integration. Together they answer questions related to sensory issues and primitive reflexes, therapy, self-care, parenting, nutrition, and health. Their goal is to empower and educate families, caregivers, therapists, and educators and ultimately create strong, confident children. You can listen on Spotify.

The Nathan Barry Show

The Nathan Barry Show is by Nathan Barry, CEO of Kit (and co-owner of From Boise!) and a creator. On the show, Nathan interviews top creators and dives into the inner workings of their businesses in live coaching sessions. He has weekly new episodes with ideas and tips for growing your business and discussions around building an audience and earning a living as a creator. You can watch it on YouTube.

Gaming Theater Podcast

The Gaming Theater Podcast talks about different aspects of storytelling and game design. Things like tropes, themes, animation, game building, world building, history, mythology, literature and so much more. They also explore how some of these storytelling elements can intertwine with different games. You can listen on Spotify.

Boise Art Scene

In January of 2020, Morgan McCollum created “Boise Art Scene” to highlight the community of artists living and working in the Treasure Valley. Starting out with over 50 short form video interviews, the podcast has now evolved into longer form audio interviews to allow a deeper dive into the artist's mindset. You can listen/watch here.

Monarch

Monarch Podcast is a 13-episode supernatural narrative podcast set in the world of long-distance backpacking. Here's the story: When Hallie Halprin - trail name Monarch - sets off to hike the Continental Divide Trail, she’s doggedly determined to go alone. While the people who know her best express concern, Monarch is unfazed. She has a plan to interview people for an audio project about supernatural encounters, a catalogue of campfire stories (no reason! she’s just interested!). The perils Monarch encounters on her five-month journey, real and imagined, mirror her complicated, optimistic, and doomed attempt to use adventure as a way to be reborn.

The podcast was created by Laura Munsil (trail name Phantom), who dreamt up Monarch while hiking 6,000 mostly solo backcountry miles on the Pacific Crest Trail, Colorado Trail, Continental Divide Trail, and Arizona Trail. The podcast is an excision of many of those memories. You can listen here.

Ok, that's my list! What are your favorite Boise podcasts?

Thanks for reading & happy listening!

With love from Boise,

Marissa
